Police in Texas say an illegal immigrant kidnapped a six-year-old girl from her home and raped her.
Edis Moya Alas has been accused of abducting the the child in southeast Fort Worth.
The girl’s father told Fox 4 that she was missing and the front door of the home was open at around 5am on Saturday.
Authorities began to search the vicinity for the girl, who was discovered eight hours later after screams were heard coming from a wooded area.
Police told NBC 5 that a local resident had heard the screams and promptly alerted authorities.
‘We owe a great debt to the citizen who actually heard the screams and notified us to go into that field area,’ said Fort Worth Police Capt. Deven Pitt.
When police reached the wooded area, they said they saw Alas with the girl. He then tried to flee.
‘He hid from officers. There wasn’t much of an area for him to run back there,’ Pitt said.
‘She was very scared. She was very nervous. She obviously didn’t get to where she was by herself.’
When police arrested Alas, it was later learned that he did not have proper documentation.
A connection between Alas and his alleged victim is not yet known.
‘Right now, he’s just being interviewed to find out what kind of involvement he had in this,’ Pitt said.
‘All we know is that he was in the presence of a child that he had no business being around at this point.’
The suspect is reportedly refusing to cooperate with the investigation.
